Unique Wedding Cake Designs

Author: Margaret Keenan

Planning your dream wedding?

This can be one of the most stressful times of your life. There are so many details to plan, from wedding cars to wedding cakes and the list goes on. When planning my own wedding last year I decided to design my own wedding cake in order to keep the costs down. What a result!

I now help many others design and create their own unique style.

There are many things to think about when deciding on your wedding cake design. Here are some to consider:

1. Cake Fillings

First decide which filling of cake you prefer. This can range from chocolate, sponge and fruit, fruit being the most popular. You could also have individual cupcakes to tier your complete wedding cake.

2. Shape and Height

Decide which shape of tier you prefer and how many you want. Three tiers are most preferable.

3. Home-made or Off the Shelf

Cakes can be bought ready made from local retailers at great prices in a range of fillings and shapes. Fruit cakes can even be bought a few months prior to the wedding, as they have a longer shelf life. This a great way of saving time. Many people have family members who are keen cooks. Maybe they could help with the baking of your cake? This could double as a wedding gift.

4. Colour and Scheme

Then finally decide on the colour and scheme for decorating the cake. The range of themes and colours depend on the season in which you are getting wed and also must compliment the colour scheme of the wedding party.

This is one of many ideas I have used - I hope you find it useful:

Creating a Tiered Wedding Cake with Glass Bowls.

Clear round fish bowls which can be bought at pet stores or craft shops are ideal for creating a stunning cake. These are best suited on round cakes. This is how it’s done. By using staggered sizes of bowls for each tier, you place them between each cake with a cake board on top. Make sure the bowl is wide enough to carry the size of the tier above.

Fruit cakes should always be placed at the bottom as they are heavier. Then place either a sponge or chocolate cake for the remaining tiers. Make sure that the icing on the cake is firm and aired well prior to decorating. This is to ensure that the above layers have a firm surface to support the tiers above.

These are just a sampling of ideas to master designing a stunning cake at a fraction of the price. You are hopefully now left with many ideas to create a unique wedding cake.

For instance, you can make many traditional wedding favors unique by personalizing them. Even simple personalized ribbons are an inexpensive but elegant gift for your guests or wedding party.

You can also make your own wedding favors. Each homemade wedding favor is a truly unique and thoughtful gift. You can buy kits online for ready-to-assemble wedding favors that you can make and personalize yourself.

You may also just want something unusual- something that your guests haven’t seen at other wedding receptions and wedding parties. There’s such a wide variety of unusual wedding favors available that you’re sure to find something you and your guests will like.

For example, consider giving your guests any of the following unusual but practical wedding favors: shot glass wedding favors; watches; golf tees and other golf-related wedding favors; bookmark wedding favors; cd wedding favors; flower seeds or wild flower seeds; or even unique magnets. You may also have an unusual theme to your wedding, and want an unusual wedding favor to go along with it. There are country wedding favors for country theme weddings and Celtic wedding favors for Celtic theme weddings.

Also consider unusual, seasonal wedding favors. Planning Your Wedding Date

Author: George Meszaros
Setting your wedding date is an important and possibly difficult task. Your wedding date will depend on a variety of factors.

Wedding Planning Time

One of the first and most important questions you might ask yourself is: How much time do I need to plan my wedding? Are you the most organized person you know? Do you have any experience planning events? Are you going to hire a wedding planner? On average, the time between engagement and the wedding day is 12-18 months.

Commitments

You want to make sure your wedding date does not conflict with other important dates such as graduations, birthdays, or any other possible significant events that might prevent your friends and family members from attending your wedding. It is good to discuss the potential dates with some of the most important members of your wedding party.

Holidays

It is generally a good idea to avoid wedding dates set for holidays such as Christmas, the 4th of July. Valentine’s Day is an exception to this rule. Valentine’s Day is the only holiday that’s a great day to get married. Many people are on vacation around the holidays, and it may be too much to ask someone to cancel their yearly vacation for your wedding.

Weekend or Weekday

Although it makes perfect sense to get married on a weekend day, you should be prepared to compete with most other brides and grooms for vendors and venues. If you plan a weekend wedding, you might have to schedule your church, reception, caterer, and other vendors as much as one year before your wedding day. Saturdays during the busiest wedding months are the most difficult to plan for since many brides are competing for the same reception and ceremony venues.

Wedding Day Expense

Popular days might be not only more difficult to book, but they might also be more expensive. Vendors might charge a higher price for more competitive dates such as Saturdays during the summer months. If you get married during the fall or winter, you may be able to get much better deals.
